HI I’M MELISSA. HERE’S A BIT MORE ABOUT ME…
AS A HUMAN…
I moved to Denver in 2011 from the Midwest. Even though I left Chicago, I will always completely love it. As I continue to grow older I am drawn more to the outdoors and nature, though certain cities still call to me. After many years I’m still not used to seeing the sun almost every day and I treasure the days when the clouds come out.
I am both a cat and dog person. While the cats have passed after 18 years, their little paw prints live next to my nightstand. I used to have a loving and beautiful Rottweiler and now I’m a parent to a smart, sweet, bouncy and insane Bernedoodle .
I’m stuck (mostly) in the 60s and 70s and have an imaginary love affair with James Taylor.
Fall is my favorite season - I love the smell of autumn and the crisp air. But since I have gardening in my bones, every summer I am excited to learn more and more. I’m a homebody AND a dreamer/adventurer and need to make sure I have a healthy balance of both.
I love to read a book for an entire day. I can get lost in the vivid details, and feel the story unfolding around me. I love this about therapy as well. I ask a lot of questions and like to learn about family, friends, clients, strangers…everyone. Most of my work and life is about curiosity and discovery. I hope to help you feel curious about yourself if I can.
AS A THERAPIST…
Graduate school helped me to enhance a lifelong skill of observing and trying to understand people. Granted, this skill may not have been my choice as a young girl, but an adaptation to my environment and family system. However, every day now it’s my choice. I have turned a survival skill into something I am proud of, and something that I can choose with healthy boundaries.
Today I choose to be in the business of curiosity and understanding, to help others begin to ask questions about themselves, and find a deep sense of curiosity that lies within. I’m a therapist because I believe we have great power to heal emotional scars by learning to put words to our thoughts and feelings and urges.
I’m sure you are entering therapy with very well honed skills and adaptations from childhood as well. Some that still work for you and some that might be holding you back. I’m looking forward to helping you make the most of your survival skills as well.
